SCA provides a full range of business start-up services to new businesses
that increase personal and community self-reliance.
Youth Urban Farm
SCA has been assisting the Mineral Spring Improvement Council's transition of their garden to urban farm. Compensated youth interns learned this summer by assisting with significant farm infrastructure improvements and with the planting, tending, harvesting and selling the produce grown.
Galaxy Grocery worker cooperative Buy-Out
Davenport's Galaxy Grocery has been serving the low income African American communities in and around Aberdeen for 3 generations. It is currently profitable and the owner wants to sell and retire. Concern that gentrification of the store by new owners would be a severe loss to the community, SCA is helping organize the employees to form a worker cooperative to buy the store. Fortunately the owner is supportive because he recognizes the employees' contribution to its success.
Mineral Rocks T-Shirt Company
